In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanna tell you about my relationship with editing video. We’ve had a ten-year relationship now, can you believe it? That feels like a long time! It’s truly been a love-hate relationship, too.

There are days when I absolutely love editing. On those days I am overjoyed by sitting in a room by myself, reveling in the video, taking the time to dive in, and completely losing myself in the project. I’ve got my mind made up on how to approach the editing, there are very few interruptions, and the computer works like a champ. It’s as if I’m part of this beautifully orchestrated dance, and everything moves together with ease. It’s so natural and delightful.

Then there are other days. Days where I sit, starring at the computer, feeling tempted to throw it out the window because the software refuses to cooperate — yet again. Those days I literally pull out my hair because nothing works and/or I don’t know how to solve the problem set before me. I have the time for editing but no inspiration. Something is off-kilter in the dance. And no progress happens. It sucks.

Today I’m feeling a little love for editing once again. I’ve recently spent a little time editing my short comedy film. It was a very different experience from my previous years of cutting documentaries, commercials, trailers, and even wedding films. This comedy was much different — in a good way. I really enjoyed it.
