Brewconomy, my next documentary about North Carolina craft beer, is wrapping up production. It’s a bittersweet time because I could genuinely spend forever visiting each brewery in the state, sampling beer, and hearing the stories of everyone involved in making it. This community is so incredible.
If we did that, however, you would never get to see the finished film! You’d hear about it and want to see it. Then you’d grow tired of waiting and stop caring. We don’t want that.
So we’re hustling to wrap it up as quickly as we can. That means: we’re in post-production! Hooray!
Post-production is a wild time. It’s when everything starts coming together: footage, graphics, audio, etc. There’s so much work that goes into finishing a film. Many hours, constructive conversations, and labor.
We hope to have the film finished in time for film festival submission deadlines this fall. So the pressure is on.
This is a very good thing, in my humble opinion, because it means you actually finish the film in order to share it with the world.
Timing is everything.
That’s why we are looking for music now.
We need awesome music that speaks to this subject. Something that says, “Yes, this is a film about North Carolina and what’s happening here right now!” The music can be any genre but we want something that works in the film.
The music can have lyrics that talk about the area, geography, people, and all the great things we love about North Carolina. Or it could have no lyrics and be purely instrumental. We’re looking for something specific, that captures a feeling we want to evoke in the film.
If you (or someone you know) is an artist, please use the comments section below to connect with me.
I’d love to check out music samples online and learn more. It’d be awesome to work together.
UPDATE: Some of you have requested sample footage of the film. We’ve just entered post-production but we do have some raw footage online. I’ve embedded some here for ya.

Excited for you!
I’m an Americana/Folk musician from Raleigh, NC and I’m a huge fan of NC craft beer. I would love to be a part of this!
I’ve used some Chatham County Line on another project and really like their range. They’re folk/bluegrass and their sound ranges from traditional bluegrass to a bluegrass/acoustic rock hybrid to the fast pickin’ style.
Give them a listen here. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Chatham_County_Line/Live_at_WFMU_on_Joe_Belocks_Show_on_7172008/
Hey Camden, these guys have some great drinking songs that may work for your doc!
Cheers,
Hank
Good morning. I would love to be a part of this. One of my tracks, Currituck, is specifically NC related. Best, Andrew
I have over ten bands in the Cardinal Collective that would more than likely be willing to help out. our Facebook page is a little better for linking up and checking out bands than actual website so recommend going there. Thanks!
I’m a local business owner and a musician on the side. I just co-wrote a song last year with some friends that is all about the food/feeling of NC. Here is a video shot just last Monday of a live performance of that song by The Josh Daniel/Mark Schimick Project (with me on Harmonica).
I’ve alerted Josh Daniel so he can reach out with all his other songs, etc.
Looking forward to seeing the documentary!

Hi!
My band the Loudermilks, from Charlotte, NC, just put out a new record this summer that has been getting some great press, and I think we’d be a good fit for your project. You can check out our record at theloudermilks.com
Thanks! Hope you like it!
-Chad Edwards
WHAT SOME CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE LOUDERMILKS:
“Americana Music just might have found their next major artist.” (Chuck Dauphin/MUSIC NEWS NASHVILLE)
“The Loudermilks take their show biz name from the Louvin Brothers’ given surname, while the ensemble’s self-titled debut album certainly draws on country music’s classic sound. Plus the band is built around two actual brothers — Alan and Chad Edwards — who were frontmen for the North Carolina band Lou Ford in the late 1990s…The Edwards brothers grew up in Cartersville, Ga., listening to country and classic rock stations. As a senior in high school, Alan Edwards discovered Album 88 college radio out of Athens, Ga., immediately broadening his musical tastes. All of those influences find their way into their album, The Loudermilks, especially in lyrics that detail the complications of a faltering relationship.” (Craig Shelburne/CMT “THE EDGE”)
“…the Edwards are back with a new moniker — The Loudermilks —and a new self-titled LP which ranks as their best yet…After dipping their toes back in the music waters via a few acoustic duo gigs, Kennerly, a strong time-keeper, came on board to whack the skins, and Shawn Lynch moved over to bass. Over roughly eight months, the band’s debut took shape in Alan’s home-studio, while old Lou Ford friends like Jason Atkins (keys) and 70-year-old former Nashville pedal steel whiz Joe Smith contributed key overdubs. The resulting 10 tracks, split evenly between Chad and Alan songs, form the most concise and focused LP the brothers have released…(John Schacht/BLURT)
“5*****This is tight, poppy Americana at it’s finest…I will have to hear a lot of first class music in the rest of this year to keep this one out of my 2014 Top Ten.” (Chris Smith/COUNTRY MUSIC PEOPLE)
“”it’s the Edwards’ knack for combining melody and musicality that elevates the Loudermilks to the status of true first time contenders.” (Lee Zimmerman/THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION)
“sparkling sibling harmony” (Ricky Flake/SUN-HERALD)
“heavenly harmonies are still at the forefront, and evocative, exceptional songwriting….A stunner. ” (Andy Turner/COUNTRY STANDARD TIME)
“of course, the foundation for all the Loudermilk’s numbers are the brotherly [Alan & Chad Edwards] harmonies that have that uncanny closeness and ability to match each other like only blood relation can illustrate. For a close harmony clinic, check out their song ‘Broken Record’, so aching and forlorn, first referred to by the guitar riff, but then brought to greater heights by the Edwards brothers’ harmonies. ‘Jim Dugan’ is another exceptional track, with brilliant steel guitar. There’s some great mandolin work on this album as well, and robust instrumentation throughout, without getting in the way of the compositions…The Edwards brothers, originally from Georgia, are now living in Charlotte, North Carolina aren’t just versed and influenced by the Americana and alt-country byproducts, but the old school country and rock origination points of the music, and you can hear this in their sound that is intelligent, lively, and multi-dimensional…their debut album is worth a deep listen.
1 1/2 of 2 guns up. (Trigger/SAVING COUNTRY MUSIC)
“it’s the sound of Old South jangle-pop and New South country, put together in a way that’s both ramshackle and refined.” (Steve Wildsmith/THE DAILY TIMES)
“The song writing is terrific and fresh…the real magic on this CD is produced by the vocal harmonies of Alan and Chad. The harmonies from these two brothers are seldom heard in music today. Every time I hear them sing, it brings back warm and positive memories of Don and Phil Everly.” (Robert Nicosia/MUSIC MAN BLOG)
“The Loudermilks have released their self titled debut album this week. That should be all you need to know to go and buy this record right now. But if that isn’t enough for you, allow me to tell you all about this talented band and brilliant record. With hints of bluegrass, classic country twang, and pop infused choruses, this talented North Carolina band joins the ranks of Sun Volt, Wilco, and The Jayhawks. Their music is honest and pure, and should be the benchmark for what today’s ‘country music’ strives to emulate….The record is packed full of beautiful instrumentation, sweet harmonies, and compelling songwriting…In a music climate that is starting to recognize the talents of great songwriters and players like Jason Isbell and Valerie June, The Loudermilks have come along at a perfect time…great record…great band” (Tony Keefer/THE MUSIC ROOM)
“The Loudermilks never stray from tradition as an Alt Country band. Musically, they…clearly grew up in the love light of Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown and other bands for whom Alt Country is a responsibility that they gladly accept. The Loudermilks strike cool gold with their name, knicked from Charlie and Lonnie Loudermilk aka The Louvin Brothers…and the band offers their own brothers, with Alan (guitar/mandolin) and Chad (guitar) Edwards sharing lead vocals. The Loudermilks do not emulate or copy their favorite bands, these guys are peers…The Loudermilks is best understood loud. It is a rock album with a major crush on country music. The stories have a rock’n’roll bed to lay in, with all the scars, smiles and shit left in place for someone else to clean up. They are smart guys and just cannot figure out why love is sticking around, admitting that ‘Quite Honestly”’ I’d have given up on me by now’, plan a weekend away by never leaving home in ‘Darkness of Hell’ and listen to the deafening silence of ‘Broken Record. The Loudermilks, like the Louvins, arrange their music to sound like everything is just fine, thank you. The playing is bright, speeding around the curves…” (Danny McCloskey/THE ALTERNATE ROOT)
“Paying tribute to the Louvin Brothers’ real name… the former members of Lou Ford pick up the insurgent country cudgel once again…. Smart songs, smart playing and smart moves make this add up nicely in a very contemporary way. Tasty stuff that anyone who ever thought of buying a classic Wilco album will want to have.” (Chris Spector/MIDWEST RECORD REVIEW)
“The Loudermilks are sometimes compared with other alt country groups such as Son Volt, Wilco or The Jayhawks and we agree because there are elements of all these groups in their music…The Loudermilks’ debut album should be the basis for a long career in the world of Americana and alt country.” (Freddy Celis/ROOTSTIME)
“It’s a special thing when talented musicians come together for the common purpose of making great music and creating art. Such is the case with a debut album released this week by an act made up of veteran artists who have experienced the ups and downs of a musician’s life, and have shown that their passion for this business cannot be denied. The Loudermilks are an act based out of North Carolina and are named in honor of the legendary Ira and Charlie Loudermilk (aka, the Louvin Brothers). Members of the band include brothers Alan (vocals, mandolin) and Chad Edwards (vocals, guitar), Jason Atkins (piano, organ), Shawn Lynch (vocals, bass), and Mike Kenerly (drums). This five-man band captures the essence of the roots/Americana sound, as their diverse musical styles shine through on this album….What sets The Loudermilks apart from a lot of other acts, is their ability to move seemlessly from their ballad side to their rocking side with absolutely no effort…A great cross between Canadian roots group Blue Rodeo and Americana stalwarts The Bottle Rockets, this self-titled debut represents a great starting point for this North Carolina band who should be on their way to a long and storied career.” (Jason Gartshore/AMERICANA REVIEW)
“4****Brothers Alan and Chad Edwards show here just how far country-simple two-part vocal leads can carry the show, particularly in the service of very respectable originals. Fronting this Carolina-based five-piece, the siblings shine particularly on ballads. Check out ‘Quite Honestly, ‘Everybody Knows You’ and ‘Jim Dugan’.” (Duane Verh/ROOTS MUSIC REPORT)
Check us out we are from Wilmington, NC and would LOVE to be apart of this!!!!!
I’ve composed a few nc local documentaries, short films, and animations! I work primarily as an instrumental electronic music composer, if u want to check out my work, go to http://www.odysseyaquaticmusic.com
Hope to work together soon!
Hey Camden,
I was actually a cellarman at Aviator Brewing Company for nearly a year. During that time I started a band with friends called Dr. Copter. I have attached a link to our unreleased EP. There are vocals but it’s mostly very diverse complex instrumentals similar to that of all the complex beers of NC. We’re a 4 piece of NC natives all with different ethnic backgrounds.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Willis
I have a new song that is a little different. May match the tone of the documentary. If interested let me know thanks!
Hi Camden,
I’m a singer/songwriter out of Raleigh, NC. I lot of my music is about drinking and times spent together with friends. Stylistically its somewhere between NC and Ireland; how far the meter goes one way or another depends on the song. I don’t know any of the songs from either of my albums would fit what you are doing but if any did, I’d be happy for you to use them.
You can hear songs from both my albums here:
http://jamesolinoden.bandcamp.com
One song that might work really well is “The Craic is Free”, which is song about the good times we share with our friends and family. The song has many Irish American references but the style of the music is more Appalachian in feel, and the singing is definitely Southern:

Hey! Kevin from Arrows Out here. We’d love to have you use our music in the film.
I’m also the assistant brewer at Fullsteam!
Hi, you should check out Brendan James. He is not a NC native but did attend UNC-CH so he’s got some Carolina roots yet 😉 Amazing singer/songwriter with an indie/alternative feel. He sings about all kinds of stuff, love, inspiration, travel, having fun… etc. Check him out!
Hi Camden!
We recently wrote a song called North Carolina Seasons that we believe would be a great fit for your film! The song was written and recorded in one week for the Brand NC competition (http://www.brandnc.org), for which we were finalists; we are working on a mastered version that is a bit more appropriate for commercial use and will have it uploaded in the next week. Please check it out at our SoundCloud page if you are interested : https://soundcloud.com/petal-steel. We are both huge craft beer enthusiasts, and are in love with this state and the wild and wonderful beers that are dreamed up and brewed here.
We are also able to quickly compose additional material, should you be interested.
Good luck with the film, and we can’t wait to see the finished product!
Best,
Petal Steel

Hi there Camden,
I might be a little late to reply to this, but if you are still looking for music- please check out mine online – http://www.reverbnation.com/jonshain – original Americana and blues based stuff. I own all my own stuff and have instrumental versions of most of my tunes, too.
