Yesterday I met with my editor, Meredith Kaplan, to watch the very first rough cut of Brewconomy.

It was incredible! I can’t tell you how much I loved watching the rough cut and how much I truly appreciate having Meredith’s help on the film!!! Yes, three exclamation points were needed. So exciting!!!

Meredith Kaplan editing Brewconomy

We met to talk about how it’s shaping up and watch the very first rough cut. I was totally geared up for a really long afternoon of intense discussions about … what now, I can hardly remember. I suppose it’s because we’d been using a story outline — but you just never know how things will work out once you’re in the editing room. (They say the film on paper isn’t the film that gets shot, and it’s definitely not the film that comes out of the editing room. So true.)

Meredith is super talented. She’s such a pro. It’s so great to have her help editing the film.

It’s also awesome to have my friend — an old pal from my days as a comedic improviser at ComedyWorx — helping organize all of the footage. Greg de Deugd is making it so easy for Meredith to cut together the footage. He’s been a HUGE help!

Have I mentioned how lucky I am to have such great support on this film? Damn, it feels good to be a director.

This is a HUGE MILESTONE, y’all. HUGE. I’m so thrilled!

We have a lot of work ahead of us. We’re hustling to get it done as quickly as possible (while we all simultaneously juggle other priorities). I think it’s coming together nicely, though.

We’re working hard on motion graphics like the opening sequence of the film, adding b-roll to the rough cut, selecting music and working on original compositions, as well as all of the post-production things that happen after picture lock. (Picture lock is when you’ve decided not to change anything else that happens on screen, so you can move on to other things like color correction and final sound.)

Yeah. We have a lot of work ahead of us. But I’m going to revel in this huge milestone for a few more minutes before I jump back on my to do list!

Brewconomy is going to be one beautifully crafted film. I can’t wait to share it with you all in 2015. If you want to get monthly updates about my life as a filmmaker — including behind-the-scenes details about Brewconomy — you can sign up right here.
