This week I was in Charlotte, N.C., for the Illumination Experience Tour. It’s a workshop on lighting for filmmakers led by Shane Hurlbut, ASC. He’s the man. (Check out his IMDB profile for a list of movies you’ll recognize.)

I’m so glad I was able to go! While I’m still processing everything, I want to share photos from the day:

Once I get a minute to catch my breath, I’ll go through more details about the workshop. I learned so much about lighting and filmmaking.

What I loved about the workshop is how it built on the Directing Motion Tour, which I participated in this summer. (Related blog post here.) With so much more knowledge about the motion of the camera and proper lighting of a scene, I feel like I’m light years ahead of where I was this time last year.

I’m ready to up my game. Big time. I think these workshops are going to help me communicate my vision as a director, and work more closely with the talented cast and crew I adore so much. This is a huge game changer for me.

If you’re a fan of StillMotion, check out the blog post / interview they did with Shane right here. I really enjoyed it. There’s a discount code at the end, too. (I’m pretty sure it’s still valid. Let me know if not, and I’ll remove that sentence from this post.)

Today I feel incredibly lucky to have had this experience. If you’re thinking about registering for the course, don’t hesitate. Just make it happen.

You’ll be glad you did.

PS: What’s with the water marks? So glad you asked. I’ve had people rip off my photos without permission so many times. That makes me sad because I’ve put a lot of work into making them. I don’t like using water marks but it’s a preventative measure, so no one feels tempted to snag a pic and post it as their own.
