“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement

Every day I face a new challenge as a filmmaker.

There is always a new fear to overcome.

What I’ve learned over the years is the challenges never stop coming and the fear rarely subsides. But leaning into the fear and moving through it gets a little easier with practice.

It’s kind of like learning to ride a bike. Or training for a marathon. Or picking yourself up off the floor and literally getting back in the saddle, when the horse throws you into the cavaletti poles.

It hurts.

It’s dirty.

It’s far from easy.

But it’s worthwhile.

The whole thing starts with one little act of bravery: making the decision to try, no matter the outcome. It continues with one tiny little step forward. It gets easier every time you look fear in the face and choose something more important: your dream.

If you want to step into the unknown, chase that big dream you’re carrying, and create a life that brings you joy – you can totally do it. You have all of the tools you need to get started right now. You are enough. Your dream is worth it.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.”

– Ambrose Redmoon

What dream are you carrying? Tell me in the comments. I’d love to cheer you on.

By the way, if you’re dreaming of a life in film, be sure to check out the TriFilm Society. It’s an organization I started in 2009 to help others find their way in the industry. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, which is why I’m working hard to build a stronger, more united film community. Join us.
